Working together with large, international organizations, the two founders were able to set up the rescue camp for captive-bred cats. Here the animals are protected and have a great new home for the rest of their lives without being constantly sold or used for commercial purposes. Currently, white and brown lions, tigers, black leopards, desert lynx, and jackals live in the sanctuary. Not to forget four adorable cats!

One of the main goals of the project is to be an informative platform to point out the bad conditions of captive cats, whether in zoos, in circuses or in the South African hunting industry! The most powerful weapon, however, is knowledge, so the project is pursuing the dissemination of information about the critical situation of the big cats throughout South Africa.

The fact that the project is not very large, creates a family environment and offers you the opportunity South Africa in a whole new way to discover. The special feature is that Tuesday, apart from minor tasks, is free and you undertake joint excursions with all volunteers in the area!

The project is not a zoo, but a refuge for big cats. The employees of the project will not only share their knowledge and experience of each species with you, but you will also be able to get to know every single personality yourself. Of course, they also inform you about the dangers of these animals in the wild and together with them you will learn interesting facts about each species. At no time is the humanization of the animals allowed, ie they are not used as cuddly animals.

Volunteer tasks:

• Morning Meeting (the daily tasks that occur during the day are discussed)
• Occupation and check-up of the cats
• Preparing the food and feeding the animals
• Cleaning the cages and bowls
• Maintenance (eg checking and repairing the fences)
• Guidance and education of visitors
• Excursions in the area

The working hours:

Usually, you work Monday through Saturday (except Tuesday). After work, you can rest or do something with the other volunteers. Sunday is always free. A possible daily routine could look like this (of course there are many small breaks in between):

06: 00 AM: Breakfast
07: 00 AM: Morning Meeting
08:15 AM: Morning Project
12:00 PM – 14: 00 PM: Lunch break
15: 00 PM: Afternoon project
18:00 PM: Dinner

Free time activities:

The project is located in the middle of the Overberg region in the east of Cape Town. Meter-high trees and high mountains are not uncommon here. Thousands of stars can be seen in the sky at night! Since the project is located between Hermans and Gansbaai, there are many recreational activities in the immediate vicinity, such as surfing, boat tours, Shark Cage Diving, wine tasting, cheese factories, hiking trails or horseback riding. On Tuesday, joint excursions of the volunteers in the area are always organized. Where exactly is it, you discuss together with the others.

Important project information:

  • When was the park founded? 2004
  • How many volunteers can help? 7 Volunteers can attend at any given time.
  • How many employees work in the park? 4 Permanent employees work at the project.

During your stay, you will be accommodated in a modern and cozy house together with the two leaders of the project and other volunteers. The house has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. You usually spend the night in a room. Single rooms are possible on request. In addition, there is a fully equipped kitchen and a large living and dining room where you can dine or watch movies, etc. Outside there is an area for the traditional South African braai and a garden with pool for those hot summer days. There is WiFi in the accommodation for R50 / week (payable locally).

The price includes breakfast (bread, butter, cheese, Nutella, peanut butter, cereals, milk, and eggs) and lunch, the latter is often vegetarian. Once a week you go shopping in a grocery store where you can buy everything for dinner and for small snacks in between.

If you have a special diet (vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.) the project calculates R200 / Week (about 13 €) additionally for the food.
