4 – 12 weeks volunteering

Some information regarding the project

The project is home to over 18 different species of monkeys. Most of these monkeys have been housed due to disabilities and/or old age. Volunteers are primarily used as guides at the sanctuary, and also take part in daily activities.

The sanctuary currently houses over 18 different species of monkeys.

The project does not allow touching of any kind and are very strict in this regard. You will be trained with other staff/volunteer members and in the end you will walk away with in depth knowledge about several monkey species.

Duties & tasks:
  • Shifts are Mondays – Fridays (08:00 – 16:00)
  • Feeding of Monkeys
  • Cleaning of cages
  • Rubbish run
  • Greeting & welcoming of guests
  • Give guided tours through the sanctuary
  • Monitoring of Monkeys
  • Assistance in odd jobs
The following skills are beneficial when applying:
  • Speak English
  • Hard-working
  • Fast-learning
  • Enthusiastic
  • Be prepared to cheerfully fulfill tasks (Welcoming tourists, informing tourists about the animals at the project, explain basic rules)

The following primates can be found at the sanctuary:

  • Black and White Ruffed Lemur (Varecia variegata)
  • Ringtail Lemur (Lemur catta)
  • Spectacled Langur (Trachypithecus obscurus)
  • Hanuman Langur (Semnopithecus entellus)
  • Black Howler Monkey (Alouatta caraya)
  • Bolivian Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri boliviensis)
  • Geoffroy’s Spider Monkey (Ateles geoffroyi)
  • Tufter or Brown Capuchin (Cebus apella)
  • Red-backed Bearded Saki (Chiropotes chiropotes)
  • Vervet Monkey (Chlorocebus aethiops)
  • White Handed or Lar Gibbon (Hylobates lar)

 

  • Shared accommodation:  (Maximum 4 beds per unit & same gender rooms)

This includes:

1. Essentials:

  • Free WiFi
  • Personal laundry on a wash, dry and fold basis

2. Meals:

  • Breakfast ( self help of cereal, yogurt, fruit, tea/coffee, toasts, spreads and/or eggs on toast etc)
  • Lunch (also self-prepared so can include sandwiches with a variety of filling options, fresh fruit and juice and/or tea-coffee and/or left-over’s from the prior evenings’ meal)
  • Dinner (this evening meal menu is generally a single dish per night selected from a varied weekly and monthly menu so varies substantially. It is pre-prepared by one of our designated cooks)

3.Transport:

  • Daily transport to and from the project
  • Assistance with transport during leisure time for shopping purposes
