Role of the volunteer

Working together with large, international organizations, the two founders were able to set up the rescue camp for captive-bred cats. Here the animals are protected and have a great new home for the rest of their lives without being constantly sold or used for commercial purposes. Currently, white and brown lions, tigers, black leopards, desert lynx, and jackals live in the sanctuary. Not to forget four adorable cats!

One of the main goals of the project is to be an informative platform to point out the bad conditions of captive cats, whether in zoos, circuses, or in the South African hunting industry! The most powerful weapon, however, is knowledge, so the project is pursuing the dissemination of information about the critical situation of the big cats throughout South Africa.

The fact that the project is not very large, creates a family environment and offers you the opportunity to discover South Africa in a whole new way. The special feature is that Tuesdays, apart from minor tasks, are free and you undertake joint excursions with all volunteers in the area!

The project is not a zoo, but a refuge for big cats. The employees of the project will not only share their knowledge and experience of each species with you, but you will also be able to get to know every single personality yourself. Of course, they also inform you about the dangers of these animals in the wild, and together with them, you will learn interesting facts about each species. At no time is the humanization of the animals allowed, i.e. they are not used as cuddly animals.

Volunteer Tasks:

  • Caring and getting to know the amazing big cats
  • Cleaning and maintaining enclosures
  • Making and implementing enrichment for the Big Cats
  • Food preparation and feeding observation (Very exciting!)
  • Making and maintaining firebreaks
  • General farm work – Physcical but essential work
  • Fence testing perimeter walks
  • Assisting during educational visits
  • Assisting to ensure smooth operations of the project

Accommodation & Meals

During your stay you will live in a modern, cozy home which is situated 5 minutes drive (25 minute walk) from the sanctuary. The house consists of 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a large fully-equipped kitchen and dining room area for everyone to cook and enjoy their dinners. There is also a cozy living room area with a fireplace. Outside you will have beautiful mountain views and there is also a braai (BBQ) area. While staying at the accommodation you may just hear the lions roaring at night.

Breakfast and lunch is provided and you will be responsible for your own dinner. You can either cook a nice meal yourself/with fellow volunteers, or enjoy many of the local restaurants on the weekly night out.

You will be taken for a weekly shopping trip to stock up on supplies.
