Project information:

Introduction:

Founded by two passionate individuals alongside international organizations, this South African sanctuary offers a new life for captive-bred big cats. Lions, tigers, leopards, lynx, jackals, and even some adorable smaller cats find a safe haven here, after enduring lives of exploitation in zoos, circuses, or the hunting industry.

This project isn’t just about rescuing animals; it’s about raising awareness. They educate visitors and volunteers about the plight of big cats in South Africa, aiming to empower people with knowledge. The small size of the project fosters a family atmosphere, and every Tuesday volunteers embark on exciting excursions together to explore the beauty of South Africa.

Remember, this is a sanctuary, not a zoo. You’ll learn about the dangers these magnificent creatures pose in the wild, while gaining insights into their personalities and needs. Staff will share their expertise and ensure the animals are never treated as cuddly toys – their wild instincts are respected.

Here’s how you can contribute:
  • Care for and learn about the amazing big cats
  • Clean and maintain their enclosures
  • Create and implement enrichment activities to keep them stimulated
  • Help prepare food and observe feeding times (it’s thrilling!)
  • Build and maintain firebreaks to protect the sanctuary
  • Assist with essential farm work (it’s physical but rewarding)
  • Walk the perimeter to check fences
  • Help educate visitors
  • Contribute to the smooth operation of the project

This is a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of these majestic animals, all while learning and exploring a breathtaking location.

Accommodation:

Your home away from home during this volunteer adventure is a modern, cozy house just an 8-minute drive or a scenic 25-minute walk from the sanctuary. This 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom haven offers the perfect space to connect with fellow volunteers. Cook delicious meals together in the fully-equipped kitchen, relax in the living room by the fireplace, or enjoy game nights in the spacious dining area.

Step outside and take in the breathtaking mountain views. There’s a traditional South African braai (BBQ) area for unforgettable evenings under the stars. Relax by the lovely dam, explore the large garden, or soak up the sun. As night falls, listen closely – you might just hear the distant roar of the lion pride calling across the sanctuary!

Meals:

No need to worry about breakfast (self-serve) and lunch (vegetarian) – they’re provided! Dinners are self-catered, giving you the flexibility to cook delicious meals together in the fully-equipped kitchen or explore the many local restaurants during your weekly night out with fellow volunteers. A weekly shopping trip ensures you’ll have everything you need to fuel your adventures.
